KOSMOPOLITE ART TOUR 2011
After 10 memorable editions highlighting diversity, exchange and intercultural enrichment, Kosmopolite has become a major event and reference in the graffiti world acting as an ambassador for Street Art and Graffiti, ever reaching out to a wide and international audience. By taking root in urban reality, graffiti as a budding form of artistic expression and experimentation undeniably takes part in the challenging of our contemporary cities’ functional and dysfunctional processes.
In 2011, from Jakarta to Sao Paulo, Graffiti takes center stage for this new edition of the Kosmo Art Tour. In Paris and Bagnolet, artists shall work hand in hand to allow each and every one of us to enjoy graffiti’s artistic wealth and diversity. With a novel collaboration between the Kosmopolite and Paris Hip Hop festivals, the Kosmo Art Tour 2011 inaugurates a new approach to cultural exchange and transmission both in France and throughout the world. With its rebellious but ever reaching out artists, Graffiti takes special care this year in extending its support to the victims of the Japanese Tsunami. An action inspired and led by the artists is therefore organized in favor of Japan.
In this fourth episodes, Cosmopolitan and international, the graffiti world has been deeply moved by the tragedy that the Japanese are weathering at this very moment. In a spirit of solidarity and involvement, the members of the Kosmopolite Association invite all artists from the Kosmo Art Tour 2011 to pitch in to uphold the Nippon cause. Indeed, each artist has been asked to create an artistic piece, the sold profits of which shall be donated to the Red Cross for its pro Japanese action.
Concretely, a « Graffiti for Japan » booth shall be set up at the location of each mural painted during the Kosmo Art Tour 2011. Said booth will allow the public, on one hand, to realize exactly what is going on in Japan, and on the other hand, to admire the artists as they work on the paintings to be donated to the Red Cross. The paintings shall therefore be created and dis- played on the site of each of the murals, allowing the visitors to appreciate the work of the graffiti artists both on walls and on canvas.
The paintings shall then be presented and sold at the Image Foundry of Bagnolet, during a special call to awareness evening, which shall take place on June 22nd. Pictures from the disaster, taken by Japanese photographer Haruki, shall also be part of the awareness campaign and displayed for the first time.
The Kosmopolite Association takes a stand by implementing the « Graffiti for Japan », event and by providing the artists with all the necessary tools and required logistics for the creation of these paintings. The Maquis-Art boutique also supports the project by taking charge of the material aspects as well as the animation of the booth. Yoshiko Sugimoto organizes the presenta- tion and sale of the canvasses.
