Patrice Rushen is seriously under-rated as a keyboard player, even though she already gets plenty of credit from those that know! One of the earliest records I know that features her playing is the 'Msingi Workshop' record, but all her 70's and 80's outputs is pretty much essential. Whenever I've chatted with fellow Rhodes players about influential solos, this one comes up all the time along with the classic Herbie tracks etc. This is the first time I've given my Clavinet a work-out on youtube and although it's fairly noisy (despite being pristine when I got it, fresh in its Hohner cardboard box, with a spare harp and price tag!) it's a damn funky instrument! Patrice often muted her Clavinet, and that's what I'd done on this track - it's more obvious in the middle register than in the lower register. You can't see the mute slider because it's underneath the LP in the video, but it's set all the way up to be fully muted.
