Conceived as a means of providing context without imposing constraints, Shmith’s ongoing artist’s book project presents the expansive field of fragmented images and texts which surround his work.
Describing the project, the artist writes: For me, the book functions as a container — somewhere to put all of my things ... obsessions, influences, ideas, loves. In my exhibitions, it functions like a reading room — a way for people to travel through my multitude of art historical, personal, political and scientific markers, thereby tracing a kind of perimeter around the “shape” of my work.
I see the book as an ongoing project, something which will be added to, reduced and re-shuffled each time it is shown — installed as either printed pages or (as here) projected video stills with an accompanying score.
