On Friday, May 3rd, San José Mayor Sam Liccardo led the commissioning of Mineta San José International Airport’s (SJC) new fleet of 10 Proterra Catalyst electric buses that will transport passengers and their luggage between SJC’s parking lots, rental car center, and terminals. SJC’s deployment is a first for a California airport and among the largest deployments for a U.S. airport. The buses and charging systems were designed and manufactured in California, and the battery packs made locally at Proterra's Silicon Valley headquarters. The fleet will charge overnight using Proterra's 60 kW depot charging systems purpose-built for electric bus fleets.
The electric buses replace CNG vehicles and are powered by San José Clean Energy, contributing to the Airport meeting its sustainability goals in conjunction with Climate Smart San José, a City initiative to reduce air pollution, save water, and create a stronger and healthier community.
