Trader Joe's refuses to sign the Coalition of Immokalee Workers' (ciw-online.org) fair foods agreement. This agreement would improve the working conditions of the pickers, who face pesticide exposure, low pay, inability to take breaks in the heat, and in some cases, outright enslavement.
TJ's response is that they already comply with the spirit of this agreement, but they refuse to make public their suppliers, the wages or conditions of those suppliers, or other necessary information. No third party has been allowed to verify their claims.
