On December 12, Occupies all along the West Coast gathered to shut down their respective ports in order to show their support for the unions and labor force who had been targets of union busting practices by corporations such as EGT and Goldman Sachs. It was also a show of force against the forces that had systematically attacked various Occupy encampments around the country in the month before.
Occupiers from around the Bay Area assembled at the West Oakland Bart Station at 5 am to caravan over to the port and disrupt the 7 am shift.
After successfully blocking the morning shift, Occupiers assembled again at Oscar Grant Plaza (Frank Ogawa) at 4pm to march back to the ports to shut down the 7pm shift. J
Just before we crossed the bridge to enter the port, we received word that the shift had been called off before we'd even gotten a chance to reach the gates.
About 8,000 protestors proceeded to the gate we'd intended to block to celebrate and hold a GA. At the GA, a decision was made to extend the block to the next shift at 3 AM in retaliation against the attacks made on various occupiers throughout the day who had been trying to shut down their own ports.
At 1 am, several hundred protestors gathered at assigned gates to block the 3am shift. At about 330 we received word that the shift had been called off.
Occupies from the Bay Area had successfully shut down the Port of Oakland for almost a full 24 hours.
