There are only about 1400 NZ Dotterel left and they are endangered by people walking on their nesting grounds - pristine beaches on both the South and the North Islands of New Zealand. There are apparently only 75 individuals left on South Island.
The Maori names are Tūturiwhatu, Pukunui, and Kūkuruatu. It is also referred to as the Red-breasted Dotterel
