I believe that while the implied meanings of artists' works and the foundation process have tremendous importance (and should never be ignored), but for me, the impact and effect that is made upon the audience when the work is finally presented is more significant. My work, 'The Listening Mirror, 2008', is a demonstration of this theory. I tried to overcome the limitation of one-way expressions and wanted to create an environment of interactive communication between my work and the audience.
How can you understand what people say if you are not listening to them? How can you realize an object's existence if you are not paying attention to it? Without attentive communication, supposedly the meaningless image could pass you by.
The mirror moves according to the volume of the music in the room, and turns in the direction of the sounds made by the audience. The mirror senses these sounds, and evenly and accurately reflects an image which is projected onto it, and as a result we are then able to comprehend the meaning of the words in the image through this reflection. Through this repetition of sensory movement, the process of gradual mutual understanding is made. And it is "Conversation".
Most people gradually get to know each other through their own style of communication and behavior, due to individual or personal attitudes. During the "Process of getting to know someone", the "Attitude of listening up" is necessary to understand each other properly.
