I teamed up again with Yin&Yang (yinnyang.co.uk) to bring you a very special Y&Y feature on NY-based spoken word artist Joshua Bennett. The Striver's Row poet performed "Balaenoptera" for us in Greenwich. Enjoy!
"Joshua Bennett is a spoken word artist hailing from Yonkers, NY. A recent college graduate, he graduated with the distinctions of Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania in 2010, after double majoring in English and Africana Studies with minors in Spanish and History. He was also chosen to be the student graduation speaker for his class. In addition to being blessed with a Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship, Joshua was also awarded a Marshall Scholarship to earn a Masters of Arts in Theatre and Performance Studies from the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom, and will pursue a PhD in English from Princeton University after his time abroad.
He has recited his original work at events such as the Sundance Film Festival, The NAACP Image Awards, The Kennedy Center's "American Playlist" and President Obama's "Evening of Poetry and Music" at the White House. In addition he was featured in the HBO series Brave New Voices, the ESPN movie "One Night in Vegas" and on The Monique Show. His first book of poetry, Jesus Riding Shotgun, is currently available for sale through Penmanship Books. He thanks God for his gifting and attributes his success to being a servant of the Lord."
