ETA Seminar on March 12, 2019
Speaker: Paul Fleuchaus, Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT)
The challenge associated with the integration of renewables into the thermal energy sector is attributed to the seasonal mismatch between times of highest energy demand and times of highest energy supply. The seasonal storage of heat and cold in groundwater, also referred to as Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage (ATES), is considered to bridge this gap. This talk presents the historical development and current application status of ATES worldwide. Based on operational experiences from the Netherlands, barriers to technology adoption are discussed from a social and techno-economic point of view.
