This narrated Power Point Presentation with video clips is a summary of some of the ideas that will be discussed in the first session of "Learn Intellectual Self-Defence" a Summer Institute in Education seminar for the Faculty of Education at UBC's Okanagan campus from July 9-13, 2012. Over five sessions, participants will learn to become critical consumers of media messages, thinking for themselves about history, current events, and politics, questioning commonly-held assumptions, seeing connections between issues, analyzing bias in media, recognizing underlying themes and perspectives in media messages, and evaluating opinions. They will also learn instructional approaches and strategies that will allow them to facilitate a similar process with their own students. See members.shaw.ca/claymcleod/LearnIntellectualSelfDefence.pdf for more information about this seminar.
