Commissioned by Seattle based composer Garrett Fisher, founder of the Fisher Ensemble, "Famine" is the first episode of Psyche, the Web Opera.
Upending the traditional “film model,” in which music comes last, the filmmakers were required to use Fisher's score and recording as the backbone for their films. In addition, footage of choreography (from the original production) was integrated into each film. Fisher's three dancers – filmed both outdoors, and in front of a green screen (allowing the filmmaker to “excerpt” the dancers and place them in front of other video footage) – create the presence of a “chorus” that appears in various ways and formats throughout the series. Beyond these requirements, the filmmakers were encouraged to “make the story their own.” While key sections of the libretto was included to buoy the story, the filmmaker was given free reign to create films that visually explored the narrative, whether on a metaphorical or literal level.
