Refurban Memphis LLC is the pioneer of Waste Redirection Initiatives in the State of Tennessee, which creates innovative partnerships to redirect leftover resources and stimulate local economies.
After analyzing state and local government spending, particularly on things considered “waste”; founder and commercial real estate developer, Devin James developed a suite of solutions that re-imagined everything discarded; starting with the people society throws away, to the properties left vacated or abandoned, and the materials disposed of in the household, municipal and industrial sectors.
Below is a snapshot of Refurban's accomplishments:
1. Acquired the historic Kroger Bakery Manufacturing Plant built in the 1940’s and vacant since 1999.
2. Adaptive Reuse to convert property and bring it life - In a phase-based approach, Refurban improved the warehouse space to launch the Material Recovery division and become the State of Tennessee's largest and first Business Incubator/Accelerator to support minority-owned startups and businesses that focus on zero-waste innovations and educating communities to “rethink” waste.
3. Established Public-Private partnerships
- Partnered with the State of Tennessee, City of Memphis and Shelby County to host a city-wide tire collection event that recovered over 60,000 waste tires in 2 days
- Partnered with the State Parks division to store 30,000 tires for the Tire to Trails project to create the State's longest walking trail made out of scrap tires at T.O Fuller Park.
- Partnered with the Downtown Memphis Commission to host recycling collection events (with 14 Ton diversion rate per event), to activate vacant lots and buildings and became the premier vendor offering ethical disposal options to the city's leading developers to reduce landfill deposits from new construction, renovation and demolition sites.
4. Success by the Ton - Last year, Refurban diverted 82 tons of Furniture and Electronic waste from landfills with no promotion and no help to drive traffic just picking up materials off the street.
