Video shot at 500 fps shows a Boa (Boa constrictor) striking and applying coils around a rat. The rat was thawed and warmed to normal rodent body temperature (38C). Note that as the boa contacts the rat with its mouth, it rotates its head clockwise and applies loops of its body around the rat to initiate constriction behavior. In the first complete loop the ventral (belly) surface of the snake contacts the rat while the lateral (side) surface contacts the rat in the subsequent loop. This results in what is referred to as a ventral-lateral coil.
