Our passage for today (1 Timothy 4:1-5) serves as an important reminder of remaining gospel-centered in the church. Paul warns young Timothy and the church of unsound teaching. We must be on guard! The key to being on guard against unsound teaching is keeping the sound gospel message of Jesus Christ in the foreground. Most false teaching is anthropocentric, meaning that it places man at the center. It falsely places humanity in a position where they can earn salvation by doing things, thus making mankind the hero. The gospel message is theocentric! It's the gospel of God (see Romans 1:1). It reminds us that mankind can do nothing to earn favor with God. Not only are we underserving and spiritually dead, and thus incapable of doing anything to save ourselves, but the gospel declares that Christ has done everything to provide salvation through His life, death and resurrection. He lived the life we couldn't live, died the death we deserved to die, and rose again! He is the hero of the story! May we learn to rest more and more in the gospel of grace-the finished work of Christ.
