When I set out to produce In The Wake Of Giants, I didn't know I would be asked to speak on behalf of the effort of volunteers who risk their lives for the sake of humpback whales. I actually really enjoy it.
The film has won awards at the Blue Ocean Film Festival, the San Francisco Ocean Film Festival and has aired on PBS' Natural Heroes.
Entanglement is a huge problem these days. The whales, dolphins and porpoises who get wrapped up in marine debris often perish as a result. Ed Lyman, head of the rescue effort in Maui says they have nearly a 100% success rate if they can get TO THE ANIMAL in time. Unfortunately, the injured animal often spooks and dives. The original spotters on the water will report the sighting, but can't always stay on hand while rescuers deploy.
