In Lebanon, it is the norm for every house to have a housemaid. Most of the housemaids come from one of three countries - Ethiopia, Sri Lanka, or the Philippines. They usually have left all that is familiar to them, at a young age, to come work in Lebanon to support their own and their families’ dreams. Many stay for 5+ years, save up their money, and leave all grown up back to their respective countries.
I sat down with Woodynesh, my grandmother’s housemaid, and interviewed her on what keeps her going as she has been working for her for over 5 years. She ran away to Lebanon because she didn’t want to get married at the age of 17. All of us have our ways to get through hard times, but her positive attitude, faith, and simple formula, inspired me to share the interview with all of you.
This project spanned only 2 days. Which included filming her working for a couple hours, recording the interview, and editing. I didn’t bring my camera with me, so I used what I had - the iPhone 8.
