‘The Enteric Consciousness’ is an installation of a robotic chair in the shape of a giant tongue controlled by living bacteria surviving in a glass stomach. In this installation, I was excited to explore corporeal relationships and a sense of touch and involve the viewer in a deep tissue massage as they could ponder two large tongues dipping into and out of chocolate suspended in dopamine molecules. The work asserts and celebrates the symbiotic relationships we have with bacterial cultures living in and on us. I am fascinated that we view ourselves as individuals when in fact we have more bacterial cells living within our bodies than “human” cells. We are dependent on the mitochondrial organelles that live within each of our cells and without them we could not survive.
