An American woman turns Parisienne. Actor Kaneza re-voices Hemingway.
Georgette is the sullen French prostitute whom American expat Jake meets in a Paris cafe in Ernest Hemingway's 1926 novel, The Sun Also Rises. Elevator Repair Service's interpretation retains the logic of Hemingway's writing, but in French. Kaneza describes learning Georgette's period working-class vocal mask -- her first encounter with the language.
Elevator Repair Service (ERS) is an experimental theater ensemble founded in New York by director John Collins circa 1991. The group voraciously employs a variety of multimedia source materials to translate non-theatrical texts to the stage.
