Paul begins our passage today (1 Timothy 5:1-16) by using family language to describe the relationships within the church of Ephesus. One of Paul's favorite metaphors for describing the church is the church as a family. This metaphor assumes relational commitment within the family of God. When the church functions as a family, it's a beautiful thing to behold. It affirms and validates the gospel of Jesus Christ before the world-the gospel message that when appropriated by faith brings sinners into the family of God, transforming us into children of God and brothers and sisters in Christ. Do you view the church as a family? What type of "family" things are you currently doing with the church? Are you willing to commit to the church family by becoming a member?
