Most of my career has been spent on The Simpsons. We were a unique show because we did a combination of Character Layout and Key Animation. Usually shows for television are story-boarded and shipped overseas for the next stages. Some lucky shows get to do Character Layout which, traditionally, is setting up the scene (based off the story-board) and figuring out where the characters are going to be in the space of the composition. The animators (usually in Korea) take those “Layouts” and use them as a backbone for their animation. On The Simpsons, we did our own animation from of our own Layouts. We would listen to the dialog recording of the voice actors and “pose out” the characters so that what is seen matches what is heard.
In the meantime, I have worked on personal projects where I took animation a bit further than we had the room to do on Simpsons. I found that working on that and in different styles improved my Simpsons work, and the simplicity and directness needed for The Simpsons improved my personal work.
I hope you enjoy some moments I brought to life over the years.
