Freevolous City Stage
Freevolous City Stage is a project by LABattoir.org program.
Freevolous City Stage is an outdoor, mobile stage designed to function as a meeting point for artists and communities and to contribute to research on the relationship between urban landscape and contemporary art. It is based on an idea of the Theatre Committee of the Municipality of Thessaloniki.
Freevolous City Stage is the outcome of a three-phase workshop, with the input of theatre, architecture and design experts and with the participation of young creators, with the aim of being able to host theatre, music, dance, fine arts, performances, circus, etc., as well as lectures and discussions. It is called upon to contribute to the activation and participation of various social groups, residents, neighbourhoods, as well as to the original use of public spaces. In addition, it aims to become a model for other cities that want to create similar structures and connect with them artistically, both in Greece and abroad.
Since its creation, Freevolous City Stage has hosted:
theatre & performance workshops aimed at the activation of public space, community-building and the exploration of the possibilities of the stage itself, led by theatre directors Yiannis Paraskevopoulos and Thomas Velissaris;
a series of Neighbourhood Symposia by director Thanasis Kritsakis held at different spaces with different possibilities - the Old Slaughterhouse building, a sidewalk at Giannitson Street and the ancient theatre of the Roman Forum of Thessaloniki;
an international symposium on service design and a panel discussion on post-industrial design in the context of the Thessaloniki Design Week;
and a discussion around a series of movies by young filmmakers, on the occasion of the exhibition FREIRAUM: From Berlin to Thessaloniki in collaboration with Goethe-Institut.
The model of Freevolous City Stage has been also presented as a best-practice example on several occasions such as Thessaloniki Design Week and RegionArts program’s visit in Thessaloniki.
