WOODLANDERS EP.27: SALISH CEDAR CANOES

Since the late 1980s, there has been an annual intertribal canoe journey in the Salish Seas. Ed Carriere, Suquamish elder and master basketmaker, has participated in every single one. He invited us to document his journey this year in Wes-i-dult, his Salish style cedar canoe that he carved thirty years ago. To him, the canoe is a vessel of knowledge, symbolizing the cultural rejuvenation of many tribes and First Nations as they rebuild their roots and travel on their ancestral waters. Getting the opportunity to participate in the Paddle to Lummi was an honor. The human devotion towards remembering and revitalizing the Northwest Coast indigenous culture is overwhelmingly moving and encouraging.
