One of Newsreel's earliest films, COLUMBIA REVOLT (1968) is an amazing document of the take over of Columbia University in April 1968, spurred by the school's attempt to take and "gentrify" parts of Harlem for a gym and its collaboration with the Dept of Defense while its students (and many others) were protesting the Vietnam War. Newsreel filmmaker Shawn Walker, an acclaimed photographer and a co-founder of the Kamoinge Workshop of photographers, spoke with Jessica Green, curator for Maysles Cinema and the Made in Harlem Series about the making of the film. Part of the TWN Evening Seminars, presented in collaboration with the Documentary Forum at CCNY and Maysles Cinema, and supported in part by the West Harlem Development Corporation. TWN is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts, the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs with public funds from the City Council, the Peace Development Fund and individual donors.
