From 1921-1951 Catholic missionaries from North America–the Passionists, the Sisters of Charity and the Sisters of St. Joseph– labored in the mountainous regions of Western Hunan in China. They arrived in a time of famine when people were desperate for food, medical help and schools. They left China after the Communist takeover in 1950.
