Mesa Verde High School was one of five high schools awarded $500 from local news station FOX40.
The school participated in the station's Just Let Me Sing Contest, in which schools were encouraged to vote for singers that uploaded their videos to the contest website. The contest focused on student participation and awarded the money to the schools that cast the most votes.
"American Idol got us thinking, 'What can we do on a local level to get local high school kids interested in music and performing?'" FOX40 Creative Services Director Greg Saunders said. "We said the best way to do this would be an online venue where they and their friends can see what's going on and vote for their favorites."
"It's the best thing," Mesa Verde High School Junior Jesse Bascom said. "We're going to put it (the money) to very good use. We will use it for new supplies and coming events. I'm just so happy we got it."
