So, for Contextual Studies this term, we covered Postmodernism in one lecture. For the following week (Wednesday the 26th), we were asked to prepare a clip from a film we thought showed postmodernist ideals. I wanted to go with something I knew no-one else would cover - My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, focusing on the amount of references to other media the show contains (or, to give it the fancy term us snobby art types use, 'intertextual content').
While everyone else would simply be able to find a clip on YouTube or whatever, this show is a slippery one. There's no one sequence I can pick out and say 'LOOK! ALL OF THE INTERTEXTUALITY'. Instead, I decided to edit together a quick video that showed clips from various episodes, highlighting how they refer in some way to other media.
As it turned out, while the reaction was slightly more low-key than I was expecting (I was told by one person later that he was looking around at the class during the screening while I stared at the screen the whole time), it did get some big laughs (particularly The Big Lebowski and Star Wars sequences), and the lecturer loved it so much she wanted to show it to her fellow teachers and indeed showed it again to one of them after the lesson.
She also wanted to put it up on the college's site, but I declined, stating I wanted to make an improved version first. What you see above is said improved version. For various complicated reasons, I had to edit the first version under strict time constraints, and so there were several problems I wanted to fix and references I didn't have time to add that I wanted to put in. For anyone interested, the changes made are:
- Tightening some sloppy editing present at various points
- Adjusting the wildly varying audio levels present from clip to clip
- Rewording a few title cards to help clarify some parts that confused some people (one person said they didn't realise the music segment was about the music)
- Adding the Discord/Q sequence
- Adding the entire fan video segment
- Adding the FlimFlam Brothers/Springfield Monorail sequence, since the episode containing it aired the Saturday after the original version was made
-Adding proper credits, the original simply read 'THE END'
-Adding the post-credits stinger
Here, then, is Meta Little Pony: Intertextuality Is Magic.
I am aware that CR's review of the series
contained the same Scootaloo/Neo "Whoah" joke as shown here. I came up with the idea separately, and then only upon rewatching his review to see if he pointed out any references I missed did I realise he'd done the same thing. I left it in regardless since a) it's extremely unlikely anyone in the class would have seen that review, and b) I wasn't expecting to be asked to upload this to the internet for all to see.
What I do admit to copying was KhalidSMShahin's Star Ponies video, simply because I didn't have much time to edit the original, and it was way better than anything I could come up with. I did try to make up for it by crediting him in the credits rather than crediting 'Star Wars', but I hope I can make up for it now by linking to the video below:
