Revelation 21 & 22: The vision that God gave to John is a reminder that Heaven is not a place somewhere out there. Heaven is the people of God dwelling in the presence of God living out the will of God. Revelation describes heaven not as a place we go but as a reality God brings to us. John describes it as the New Jerusalem. It is the city where God dwells.
In this New Jerusalem, there is no temple. In the Old Testament, the temple was the dwelling place of God. Why is there no temple in the New Jerusalem? It’s because weare God’s temple. In the New Jerusalem, the temple is not a building or a room. It is the people of God. God dwells in us and we dwell in God. And the good news is that we don’t have to wait until Christ returns to become citizens of this New Jerusalem. In Christ, we are citizens now. We are the city where God dwells. And one day, when Christ returns, what we experience in part now we will experience in all of its fullness.
