I have created a monument to the original incident that sparked the Crown Heights Riots, to bring people back to the beginning. The monument is to the innocence of Gavin Cato, a boy on his bike. I have created a functioning golden paper bicycle that my 9-year-old son rode through the intersection at which Gavin Cato was struck and killed. This paper bicycle will fail as a vehicle and as a monument, as did the driver of the car that struck the pillar that then failed by collapsing on him, as did the response of the emergency medical technicians and police that arrived first on the scene and failed to bring him back to life, as did the violence and hatred that proceeded his death.
