Documentation of durational performance using knitting and unravelling as a way of marking time and memory, evoking an attempt to ‘make time stand still’.
I sit between two long strips of knitting hanging from the walls either side of me, their unfinished edges joined in the middle by a strand of yarn. Taking the yarn from the right, I knit to add to the strip on the left, unravelling the right-hand strip as I do so. After an hour I turn over my hourglass and change direction, unravelling the left-hand strip and reknitting the yarn into the right. Over the course of the performance the same length of yarn is continually unravelled and reknitted, revealing the traces of its journey and marking the hour I attempt to ‘hold’ between past and future.
