The tradition of murals goes back to the pre-historic cave drawings. In modern times the murals often express a political protest or social issues of various kinds. The best known are those in Mexico, Northern Ireland and on the Berlin Wall. Those in Orgosolo are no exception in that they illustrate the specific character of the community inhabitants, who pride themselves to be aborginal Sardinians, rebellious against the authorities and their imposed law and order. 'Bandits of Orgosolo' is the title of the movie shot in 1961.
