Does it have to be this way? Do you long for things to change?Currently, most people in our society do not seem happy with the state of the world. People want change. Even if we cannot agree on the change needed, the desire for things to be different than they are now is strong. However, in our personal lives, this desire for change may not be as intense, but is still often present. Some do want great personal change because they find themselves in difficult situations. For others the desire for change is more subtle. Maybe just a desire for a life with more meaning or more contentment.
As Christians, we claim that through Christ there is redemption. Redemption is not another word for change. Redemption is deeper and more complete. Sadly, for many redemption has become a “religious word” without much of a definition. We know we are redeemed from “our sinful ways,” but don’t have a picture of what we are redeemed into. The human experience at its core contains brokenness, separation, isolation, fear, and insecurity. Unlike change, redemption in Christ enters deep into the human reality and redeems it. These things through Christ no longer have to dictate the reality of our being. Thus, we have a new freedom from them which is nothing less than a new life through Christ and a new reality initiated by Christ called “kingdom come.” Change does not touch this, but in Christ’s redemption there is a whole new creation.
