Like leaders of an autonomous spiritual order, MANIAMANIA have collected thought forms, visionary experiences and tripped out icons for their new collection, ‘The Modern Utopian’.
This film encapsulates the mood of the dark place in which light is bred and enlightenment begins.
Radial lines are traced from Californian communes and cults of the late 60s and 70s so to consider a philosophical dichotomy - hedonism vs. spirituality. The door to their triangle of influences is the spirituality embedded in ‘Rock n Roll’ and western pop music’s romanticism of eastern transcendence. While grounded like a rock in the physical realm of performing and listening, it too rolls out an opportunity to transcend to higher states – a notion symbolized by The Beatles relationship with Maharishi and his address at Woodstock.
Brass and silver-plated snake rings and bangles symbolize Kundalini awakenings at The Hog Farm – a politically and musically active hallucination family. Smokey Quartz crystal and Black wooden carved tusks honour the light and dark auras and opposing forces of Apollo – the god of sun dreams and reason - and Dynonisus – the god of wine, ecstasy and
intoxication. A new manifestation of the Immortals story features crystal ball shaped stones emblematic of the witchcraft practiced by Keith Richard’s muse, Anita Pallenburg. The ‘As Above So Below’ story is an engraved harmony of zodiac, pagan, wicca and alchemy symbols with the Latin verbatim “As Above” and “So Below” iconic to The Source Family commune’s psychedelic house band Ya Ho Wa 13.
The collection intermixes pathways, devices and philosophies of enlightenment into a new visual language. By shepherding the motley moods of pop musicians, trippers and gurus all questing for the same goal, presence the totems of ‘The Modern Utopian’ continue as an exploration of human potential.
