Dance on Film "Subliminal Mind"
Alya Manzart's Subliminal Mind is a black-and-white three-minute dance film that offers a playful insight into the layers of a girl's mind. The movement of the subconscious is depicted in dance, with characters who live through symbolic elements. Here, the subconscious has its own place, shadowing us, reworking the memory. It dreams, it climbs, it falls into the water of the subliminal mind.
As a dancer I was fascinated with representing what lies beneath the surface of our mind, this watery elusive realm that lives beyond our conscious boundaries. This personal unconscious reservoir dances into the veil of the conscious mind, wanting to be seen and heard. I think dance on film best animates this vast hidden inner world of strong feelings -- this continuous stream of content and flow of impulses, this secret source of much of our thought, feeling and behaviour. We are all caught up in this movement, needing no forward or backwards, building a life from this underlying instinct.
