Today I witnessed one of the most intriguing and impressive events held in Singapore. Thaipusam is a Hindu festival where (mostly men) carry various types of kavadi. They may carry a pot of milk, however mortification of the flesh by piercing the skin, tongue or cheeks with skewers is more common. Generally, Hindus take a vow to offer a kavadi for the purpose of compensating or preventing a great disaster. The Kavadi itself is a physical burden through which the devotees implore for help from the God Murugan. Most intrigued I got by the looks in their eyes; dazed and proud at the same. Experiencing a festival like this brought a mixed feeling of both shock and sympathy.
Footage can be disturbing and/ or shocking.
