In 1997 Antofagasta PLC began construction of Los Pelambres copper mine. The open pit mine is located 3,800 meters above sea level in the Andes Mountains on the border with Argentina.

In 2008 El Mauro tailings dam was built to hold toxic waste material from Los Pelambres.

Today, El Mauro is the biggest toxic waste dump in Latin America.
