The Alchemical Room (excerpt 2:30)
A short excerpt of a 45 minute live performance, from the Mixology Festival May 4, 2010 at Roulette, NYC.
The Alchemical Room is a audio/ visual live performance by Madeleine Gallagher, Adam Savje and D. Edward Davis that uses the Theory of the Four Temperaments as structure for both the audio and visual score.
According to ancient philosophers and physicians, personalities and moods, developed as a result these temperaments known as humors – sanguine, choleric, phlegmatic and melancholic. This alchemical mix of fluids in the body were determined not only have a color scheme, but also specific material qualities.
The live visuals explore emotional states as visual effects, transforming footage of bodies of water, Anthony McCall’s “Line Describing a Cone”, the Winchester Mystery House and fields of flowers on the California Coast.
Gallagher and Savje collaborated to generate visuals using a variety of techniques which include hand made optical effects on film, hand painting, photography and Processing. Gallagher performed live using VDMX to audio composed and performed by Davis.
