In the Spring of 2019, thanks to a grant from the Thomas Thompson Trust, Anderson Center for Autism and the Village of Rhinebeck collaborated to make the historic village the first Autism Supportive Community in the Hudson Valley region. Educational forums were held to shed light on how autism presents and what people can do to be more supportive. An impressive 68% of businesses and organizations signed on to do "Just One Thing" to make their environments more autism-friendly. The effort is a heartwarming example of how a community comes together — from the Village Mayor (Gary Bassett) and local volunteers and businesses to Northern Dutchess Hospital, the Beekman Arms, the Police Department, and many others.
