February 2011, the newly established Cherokee County Arts Council in Murphy, NC sponsored a program that takes a creative approach to promoting healthy eating habits in youngsters. The first program was held at the Learning Center in Murphy for 8th graders and 4th graders.
Nanette Davis, art teacher and nutritionist engaged the students with an overview of color theory, and related the aesthetics of color to the nutritional value found in fruits and vegetables. After creating a color wheel composed of food, students were able to enjoy a sampling of the fair along with rice and baked chicken.
The Cherokee County Arts Council (cherokeecountyartscouncil.org) has plans to extend the program to schools through Cherokee county.
