At Kinetica 2012 I demonstrated how to build a working clock from LEGO Technic. The talk includes a breakdown of the components at play in a clock: the pendulum, pulley, escapement and dial. I also show some of the methods I used for rewinding in installations, and conclude with a demonstration of my plaiting machine.
The audience questions at the end are:
- What is the rewind mechanism used in an actual clock?
- What inspired me to start making it?
- What is your background?
- Do you have any plans to build a bigger version?
A huge thank you to Az and the Kinetica crew who helped with this recording. My presentation time was moved from 2 to 12 and I know some people missed it for that reason; we captured this video so you would have a chance to see it.
This clock will be shown at the Museum of the History of Science in Oxford between 13th and 16th March, with more talks at the Museum on the 17th March and the BEAM festival on March 10th. I'll be doing a cut-down version of this talk at the Festival Of The Spoken Nerd on the 20th Feb festivalofthespokennerd.com/20-feb-festival-of-the-spoken-nerd-game-on/.
