In an increasingly urbanized world that favours mass production, custom furniture making is disappearing. Niels Jensen—a sixth-generation cabinetmaker of Danish origin—has acquired a remarkable knowledge of his craft over his nearly forty-year career. This short documentary follows Jensen as he accompanies a diver to retrieve an ancient birch log from the bottom of Lake Memphremagog and then transports it to a sawmill, a kiln, and then to his workshop, where he transforms it into a dining table. As he works single-handed, Jensen shares his thoughts about his creative process and life as a rural craftsman in the Eastern Townships of Quebec.
