The Demetrios snail
During the Great Dionysia of the year 308 BC it is mentioned that the Greek statesman Demetrios of Phaleron astonished the public with an unsual automaton.
For the procession in honor of the God Dionysus, Demetrios provided a large mechanical crawling snail, moved by 'the Hand of God'.
In 1937 the German philologist Albert Rehm wrote an essay about the mechanism of these machines, translating and analysing old fragments and antique letters.
He came to a rather surprising conclusion...

Die Schnecke des Demetrios
Während der großen Dionysien im Jahr 308 v. Chr. wird erwähnt, dass der griechische Staatsmann Demetrios von Phaleron mit ungewöhnlichen Automaten das Publikum in Staunen versetzte.
Für die Prozession zu Ehren des Gottes Dionysos setzte Demetrios riesige mechanische Schnecken ein – bewegt durch 'die Hand Gottes'.
Im Jahr 1937 schrieb der deutsche Philologe Albert Rehm ein Essay über den Mechanismus dieser Maschinen – basierend auf Übersetzungen und Analysen alter Textfragmente und antiker Briefe.
Er kam dabei zu einem überraschenden Ergebnis....
