An old one. This my second rock video I made professionally. It’s obviously a riff on Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo. Hitchcock would have been a pretty bad ass video director.
I was primarily known as an R&B rap director at the time. I’m guessing I got the job because Mike Patton just thought my idea was so weird he had to see how it came out. How many rock stars would want to wear Kim Novak’s dress? And I pitched Jennifer Jason Leigh that she would die as Kim Novak and come back to life as Bettie Page.
I was my own DP and editor on this, and the tricky thing was I had to force myself to anti-light the interiors with retro cross shadows. We shot completely in San Francisco on the actual locations Hitch made the movie on. I do not have a Hitch-like cameo in here. I am too Korean to hide myself in this world.
I have no idea what that bagel was all about. I don’t like it either. I was just tired and loopy and it seemed like a good idea at the time.
