“This Land” by choreographer Andrea Knowlton explores land – in all its glory, and implications. Set to an original score by J.C.Scheid the work exists at the intersection of border politics and environmental crisis. Steeped in “Modern Americana” the choreography juxtaposes patriotic symbols with a starker American reality. Lady liberty, climate change, folk music, gerrymandering, and a town that still doesn’t have clean drinking water are all stirred in the same pot. The performance creates commentary on two clashing themes– a manifest desire to control land, and a simultaneous detachment from its actual care and stewardship in the face of environmental crisis.
