In the Disney animated classic, The Lion King, the little lion Simba sings one of the film’s most memorable songs, “I Just Can’t Wait To Be King.” In the song, Simba rehearses the perks of being royalty: “No one saying do this; No one saying be there, No one staying stop that; No one saying see here…Free to do it all my way.” These lines encapsulate the allurement of being king. Like Simba, Israel too was enticed by the trappings of royalty, except the Israelites didn’t want to be kings, they wanted kings to rule over them. Even with God’s warning concerning the dangers of having a king, the Israelites did not desist in their cries for a king. When it comes to kings, people either want to be kings or they want to have kings to take care of them. As Christians, we are called to trust in King Jesus, for He is the king we cannot be and He is the One who can take care of us like no earthly king can.
