Directed, Shot, Edited & Graded by Paul van Kan
Message from Director :
"You ever just feel so overwhelmed, you just get in your car and drive?”…. A great escape, a break from it all - in a world that is increasing in interconnectedness and decreasing in anonymity is sometimes so hard to find.
That feeling of wanting respite, which many of us can relate to, yet is so unique to each individual experience, is exactly what I wanted to capture in this video. I can’t count how many times I’ve driven into the night in my old 85' Nissan 300zx to leave it all behind, so it was the perfect vehicle for this video.
Mojo Juju teams up with Joelistics to tell a story of her social and political experience with the music industry, media, and certain social circles following the release of her hit song, 'Native Tongue’. Mojo’s powerful voice and Joel’s glitchy hypnotic beats lend a perfect canvas to shoot something emotionally meaningful but gritty. We shot the entire music video in 2 nights in the city of Sydney. We really wanted the chance to be scenes to have an Australiana feel.
The two main verse scenes feature characters that metaphorically represent the individuals Mojo frustrations are aimed at. We felt it was important to show that although Mojo is sharing her experience with us, she needed to remain indifferent in her demeanour. Hence, she doesn’t interact with anybody within the film clip except for Joel. Almost like they are figments of her imagination or a fading past.
As director, shooter, editor and colourist, I found it super gratifying to bring this vision to life. Working alone on a project from start to finish tends to allow room for it to evolve freely.
It has been such a memorable experience working with Mojo and Joel. They really gave me a lot of space to create, and trusted that the outcome would compliment the song. “
