Melancholy, sadness, profound pensiveness – a mental condition characterised by a gloomy atmosphere, sad thoughts, weakness of will and a feeling of inner emptiness. A passing mood shaped by pain, nostalgia, sadness or introspective thoughts, which are then projected onto the outside world. Historically speaking, it is necessary to differentiate between melancholy as an illness and the melancholic as a human type alongside the other three traditional temperaments, such as the sanguine, choleric and phlegmatic. The melancholic has a tendency to be pessimistic and has an outlook that is governed more by mood and emotion than by acts of will.
