This is a time-lapse video I shot February 28, 2012 documenting the placement of the newest greenways bridge on the Roanoke Valley Greenways system, a bridge that spans the Roanoke River at 17th ST in the City of Roanoke. The placement of the bridge was done in one piece, 215 feet long, weighing 65 ton. It took two cranes and four hours to complete the process, but the video compresses the process into a little over a minute. The largest crane used, which was on this side of the river, had 215,000 pounds of counterweight on it. The first step in the process was to pick the bridge up and place it half way across the span where the second crane could attach to its end. Then both cranes were used to actually lift the bridge completely across the river and place it on the abutments on each side of the river. Pretty amazing engineering!
