In this Friday Afternoon Video, Mehmet explores the digital lives of young people. Here is his summary of the presentation.
One of the emerging problems in today’s world is the relationship with the new digital technology. It is a very big challenge for everyone since it has revolutionised our world and changed everything. On the one hand, for young people to respond to these changes is easier than adults because they were born as digital natives. On the other hand, in today’s world, especially in western countries, young people are infantilised.
I have been working with young people since 2003 and with their online related activities since 2006. However, the funny thing is I’ve never listened to young people about all these activities and about their experiences, understandings, difficulties and so on. Therefore, in this Friday Afternoon Video I tried to explore young people’s understanding of their lives, of themselves, of their digital behaviours, of their relationships, of their skills, of capabilities and of their experiences concerning their digital lives with their parents and teachers.
Because I am not a digital native, I try not to put myself in an expert position but try to “co-research” with them about the problem since they have insider knowledge (Epston, 1999). On the other hand, because I have a title and some works on this issue, young people will have a chance to speak through me, not just to me (Denborough, 2018).
