Meet Soniyyah, a minister and environmental justice worker in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Soniyyah works with her community to answer questions like ‘why is Arkansas getting so much rain?’ and ‘why is it so hot in Arkansas?’ and to provide them emotional support. She also volunteers with Citizens’ Climate Lobby in Arkansas, in which she works to build support with her members of Congress for a climate change solution called the Energy Innovation Act that would also help low and middle income people.
Fort Smith, Arkansas, and the neighboring town of Moffett, Oklahoma, were hit with devastating floods in May of 2019. Soniyyah talks about how the lowest income residents were hit hardest, and will have the most difficult time recovering from the flooding. She also shares her secret for working closely with people she doesn’t always agree with. ‘It’s easy to do the work if you’ve got love.’
